Here's a shortlist of favorite horror novels, (A list of short story authors would definitely include EA Poe, T Ligotti, A Machen, A Blackwood, CA Smith, R Aickman, C Barker and B Evenson.) Dracula by Bram Stoker. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.Some of my favorite authors in this genre are Patrick O'Brian, Bernard Cornwell, and Colleen McCullough. I also love Larry McMurtry and Dan Simmons, but their works are probably somewhat over-fictionalized. I am quite often drawn to Historical Fiction. Comedy/satire, and philosophical novels.Haven't read all of them yet (just finished Time of Contempt), but Sword of Destiny is my favourite so far, I love those short stories. Sword of Destiny, especially Something More and A Little Sacrifice teared me apart. I'm only to read Lady of the Lake and I expect it to top those two. Lady of the Lake, quite by far. A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Bill Bryson's works are fantastic. He makes rather cumbersome history more accessible just by relating things to everyday life. This is a brilliant book - it points out how complex and amazing science is, and yet how much we don't really know.
