This probably means that the champion shrines get you spirit orbs as well, but only so many of them. You can only ever have three full wheels of stamina and 30 hearts. There are lots of recipes you can make that give you "temporary" Stamina and Hearts, but they do not let you break those caps, so you can feasibly play with full supplies of both pretty early, and eventually you'll max out one of the other and food bonuses wont help.
