Darkness falls best class.

There's a bunch of mods that have different classes, but nothing that just lifts out the class mechanic because it touches so many other things like loot and doesn't cover the action skills. None of the others are as good, imho. DF veteran here with some tips: Always take laborer as your starting class. Completing your class quests gives you a helmet light, a nail gun, and early access to better tools, workbenches, concrete and steel.
