A simple cannot-die shield source will prevent the paladin from knocking themselves out (an upgrade adds an auto-revive, but avoiding injuries is nice). Triumph of the Crusaders from the priest spell list can give the paladin an immense amount of health with each fallen enemy, counteracting the raw self-damage. Multiclassing in this game is really great, especially among melee classes. Like, having played it through now three times, I cannot imagine any reason to take a Paladin as a pure class.
