If you are trying to get the grim troupe quest and update the charm, then yes, you need to have the charm equipped. Note that if you actually banish the troupe, you will lose the charm (and get a chance to get a new one), but if you are only defeating Grimm minions, the charm should stay there.It's a useless entry anyway.
