The character will authomatically put them in their inventory and then proceed to barricade. OP issue is having the nails still in a box: items in boxes need to be manually unpacked to be used.

It's unintended. Although I guess it's the same as just changing the "zombies can attack player-created objects" setting in sandbox, which you can also do. Maybe, but the build 41 itself isn't balanced yet. tbh, you can just phase through furniture that is blocking windows.

Metal sheets and bars have 5k per so if you double barricade you get 10k total. Each wood plank you have up will give you 1k protection so if you have four on each side it's a total of 8k. Same here, I just figured out that Realistic Weapon Durabilities was causing the issue. Disabled it on the load screen, started the file, option now shows up (and works) just fine.
